Far
from flourishing in the hot sun as one would expect, they are carefully nurtured
in moist conditions under a framework covered with netting which diffuses the
heat of the sun. They are much in demand throughout the world. On a smaller scale,
vanilla is also grown here. A visit to the nuseries is combined with a tour of
the Bois Cheri factory and tea plantation and ends with a delicious creole lunch
at the fine old St Aubin plantation house, originally built in 1819.For the many discerning tea drinkers throughout the world, the name Bois Cheri will be familiar. Tea is grown here on the 1500 acre estate in the south west of Mauritius. It is a familiar sight to see women employees threading their way through the waist high tea bushes, picking the tender green leaves and filling the baskets on their backs. By 10 am, their working day is over, and the leaves collected and taken to the factory to start the drying process which is the first in a complicated routine which ends in the production and packaging of three different blends - regular, vanilla and earl grey. Naturally, the tour ends with a cup of tea! |
